Day 5 Evergreen Micro II (GC1GMF9) In a round about way

Can you get lost while using a GPS? I can, well maybe not lost but definitely off track. This was on of those occasions. I started on the path to one geocache and ended up on another lol. We, that is Niki, Novalee, KC and I ended up walking in a horseshoe pattern. This is how it went down.
I woke up hearing the rain. I wondered if Niki would still want to come with me. She did, so we all geared up and headed out. I fired up the GPS found that 12 Cubed was the closest cache. Saw that it was not to far away from where we had found Homeward Bound yesterday. I was eager to begin. I figured this cache was going to be quick and easy. Novalee decided that her hood would be enough to fend off the rain. Niki brought an umbrella. I of course wore my fedora. We walked in the rain. I was playing with the GPS and somewhere between here and 12 Cubed I accidentally switched to the Kane Travel bug Motel. Unfortunately I did not realize this until we had almost arrived at the Kane Travel Bug Motel cache. I was puzzled too. I could not figure out why we weren't routed through a quicker route. I was mentioning this to Niki when she asked if maybe we were heading to the  Kane Travel Bug Motel cache again. "Thats impossible." I was saying when I stopped in sudden realization that she was right, "Sun of a" I exclaimed. I smiled at her sheepishly as the rain soaked into us. I was kind of torn between decisions. Niki was dry, Novalee was wet but in good spirits, but poor KC was done for. He does not like the rain. I was thinking real fast now. I knew I wanted to get a cache in today. Should I send them home while I continued? No, Niki had an appointment in St. Marys scheduled for a little later on. I was to look after Novalee when she left. So that was not an option. Should we back track the 3 tenths of a mile to 12 Cubed? How could I have messed this up? I usually have personal protocols in place to keep me on track. I hate to look foolish. I actually fear loosing the respect of loved ones. Leading them astray like this kind of hits me below the belt. Self Sabotage strikes again. Can I recover, get my daily cache, and save the day? Hmm I search the GPS for an answer. Yes there is yet another cache near by. It is the Evergreen Cache Micro II, it is only .2 miles away. Score!, and the route home from it is very quick. Double Score! I tell the GPS to reroute us. Then I look up from the GPS and smile with confidence and address Niki "We can either go back .3 miles or go ahead .2. I've located another cache site in Evergreen Park." Niki smiles at me. This makes me glad as she is not upset. I don't want her to stop geocaching with me. I really like her company.  She says well we are close to Evergreen."  "I know," I said, and "This way." I start walking.  Sorry 12 cubed but you will have to wait anothe day. On track now, we continued on past Kane Bug Motel which of course is on Greeves St.  Exited onto N. Frailey St. Walked along N. Fraley St. for a bit crossed at a crosswalk near  Choice a tobacco store with a big yellow sign. This put us on Chestnut St. and across from Evegreen Park. We crossed Chestnut and entered into the park through a very nice war memorial area. I stopped to look at the stones honoring the sons of Kane who died in conflicts abroad. On the move again the GPS counting down feet as we near our destination. Once we are within 13 feet of the cache I begin to read the cache description. As I finish reading Niki cries, "uuiii I found it." Wow she is good! I encourage her with a smile and a, "wow, I can't believe it" We spend a few minutes talking about her triumph. "I am glad you are with me I tell her." and confide that I actually am  not that good at finding caches. "Yes you are she says." "No I'm not" I argue, "I used to call David Hawk Eye, because he actually found most of the caches we had hunted down years ago." David is my oldest child. He is 20. Niki nodded, whether she believes me or not I can feel she has confidence in me, and this warms me to the core. The rain is picking up. I rummage through my pack for a pencil so I can add my name to the log book. Once logged we place the cache back in its hiding place. KC eagerly  leads us home. Off track as we were all worked out very well.

Day 4 Where is Homeward Bound Micro(GC2f0YV)? Biddlebeach's "Bright Idea" GC1BHE7

Day four. Just Novalee and me today. Niki was off to some tax classes. After saying our good byes Novalee and I geared up.
Over cast skys today. No feeling of impending rain. We wore winter hats and sweatshirts. I wore my camera, which rested on my chest supported by the strap around my neck. It is a big thing that feels out of place when ever I wear it. It is the best camera I have ever owned, so no complaints.
Once geared up Novalee and I hit the pavement fired up the gps. I noted that the closest cache was Homeward Bound Micro (GC2FOYV). I sighed. I  don't have much luck with Micro Caches (MC). I shrugged. Who knows this one could be different. Novalee and I held hands and we headed towards Moffit Ave. Down Janeway St right onto Welsh. The Blue and white two tone house on the cornner is still being worked on. Guess the new owner prefers dark brown and tan though. I think the guy is a house flipper. The house is looking pretty good though. So once on Welsh St we headed up towards Moffit Ave. Two intersections later we arrived at Moffit... Not far now. I like getting closer to a cache and watching the distance slowly begin to decrease. And then we arrive. Novalee and I rutt around in the front yard of someones house. I don't like doing this. I feel like I am invading somones personal space. The description on the cache page says go ahead. So we did for a little while.. MCs' are tricky though... They are....well, lets just say aptly named. While rutting around the front and sides of the house a neighbor came out. Looked at us curiously. I was compelled to tell him what we were up to. Lol, he thought we were looking for a lost cat... sigh. Even though we told him cache several times. I even explained to him what a cache was twice... Both he and his dog walked on eventually wishing us luck in finding our cat.  Shortly there after Novalee and I decided to go hunt down another cache, and come back to this one another time... The bright side of this cache is I had fun with Novalee. She was very interested in the ferns around the property. She picked a few as I checked the gps for another close by cache. I announced to her that we would be heading too Biddlebeach's "Bright Idea" . At that moment I looked up and there she was a big fern in each hand flapping as though they were wings.  Sweet girl.
So we walked to the end of Moffit Ave and turned right onto Hacker Street, which flowed out onto route 6. There we took a left and began to close the distance between us and the cache. Along the way Novalee began to sing. Stopping periodically to point out  the occasional decorated for fall window or stuffed yard ornament. I of course kept an eye out for the colors of fall that occasionally burst forth in the spectrum bordering pastel. The GPS led us to the Biddlebeach beauty salon. The proprieter greeted us with a smile and a wave. I smiled back showed her my GPS. I entered her salon and asked if she would mind if we poked around a bit. "Let me know if you need any help" I said, "thank you", and we began poking around. I will not tell you where the cache is but I will tell you it was tricky. Before  I had a chance to locate it though Novalee started to hold her self and began doing a very familiar dance. I entered the salon again. The proprieter asked if we needed a hand. I says, "Yeah, can we use your restroom." She led the way. After I helped Novalee with natures call.  The Proprieter introduced herself. I cannot remember her name, however she also told me her ground speak Id  Biddlebeach. I introduce myself, and Novalee, aka Stash Hound. Being that Biddlebeach was between customers we chatted for a bit. She could not help but give me a much appreciated tip as to where the very tricky cache was located. We bid her farewell and promptly located the cache. We took a few pictures. I am glad that we found the cache. However if we had not we would have still left a little richer for having met her. There was another boone for me at Biddlebeach, for in the back there is an amazing tree bursting with an incredible shades of red. Eye candy for sure.
Novalee and I retraced our route back to the Homeward Bound cache, there we met the owner of that cache and her daughter. With a little better hint I located it while Novalee played with her daughter. We exchanged pleasantries. We parted ways and headed home. All and all a morning was had.

Day 3 Under Eight Flags (GC11Q3V by Glendorn)

Wow day three already. I woke up this morning ready to go. Of course that did not stop me from enjoying a fresh cup of coffee first. The house did not carry a chill this morning, not like it did yesterday. So I figured it was not as cold. A glance at the sky through the window promised me rain. No problem I can cope with that. Truth is I like walking in the rain. I quickly found out Niki was coming with. We donned our gear, got our yellow lab/coon-hound dog/mutt KC, and darling daughter Novalee ready and we were off. I fired up my trusty GPS and found that the Under Eight Flags GC was the closest @ .4 miles away. So we were off up Janeway onto Dawson towards Holman. It was on the way to Holman St that Niki commented on the sky clearing up. I looked up to discover she was right. The solid grey cloud cover had been breached by the sun, and his army blue sky. Niki and I smiled at each other. She was telling me she might do a couple loads of laundry. At the intersection of Holman St, and Dawson I had a decision to make, to go up Holman or not to. I knew either way I would make it to my destination. Niki and I had a hunch that the Eight Flags GC was at the VFW, which of course is off of upper Holman St..I glanced down at my gps and decided to stay on Dawson for now, and head over to N. Oak. I am glad I did, there are a couple nice porch fronts decorated for the fall season along that way. I appreciate the people who make that extra effort. Some day I might even become one of them. So Dawson comes to an end. North Oak begins at a 90degree angle heading south towards Fraley St. N. Oak is one of those streets you just can't dress up. The buildings are in good repair but it just seems crowded and frumpy. Houses are too close to each other and the road. At one point the side walk disappears. There is a used car dealership on the corner. So we come to the end of N. Oak where it intersects with Fraley St. I check my gps readings again and decide to head along Fraley to the top end of Holman St.. I know it was sort of a back track, but hey it is not always how quick you get to the cache, it is the journey and ours was going very well.  We cross Fraley as it intersects Holman, and we continue on towards the VFW.  The distance between us and the cache constantly receding. This section of Holman is all up hill. As we walk I see our destination, the VFW, which is nestled between my first place of employment in Kane, and my Second.  Kind of weird, huh? I always look up at Kane Screens with curiosity. Leaving a place of employment is like leaving a family. I always wonder how so and so is doing but I never take the time to find out. Looking at Eagle Bio Diesel I get the feeling of hope. I am part of  a better future, if they take off and soar like their namesake. I can only hope. We have arrived at the VFW. The gps says we are about 30 feet away from the cache... Niki, she is like an arrow guided to her target by some invisible marksman. "I found it." she states. I am amazed, as she describes how she spotted a glimpse of the hidden cache container. Kudos! Novalee and I pose for a few pictures. We walk home retracing our steps, well sorta, as we avoided N. Oak this time and stuck to Holman. Like tourists we snapped more pictures along the way.  By the time we got home the clouds had sealed their breach, and a light rain came down. That is ok though, I like the rain.

Day 2 Kane Travel Bug Motel (GC11Q3Q)

It is morning, and I've decided I should get into the habit of (GeoCaching) (GC), (Questing) in the morning. My first thought this morning, "I really don't feel like GeoCaching today" Lucky it was a weak thought. It is funny though, I really like GCing. I have since the first time  I read about it in the back of a Knights of the Dinner Table, comic book by Kenzer Co., boy have I had a few laugh out loud moments reading the Knights, though I digress. Lets just say GC sorta instantly resonated with who I am. It also resonates well with most of my friends. Most of us have enjoyed the hobby together at one time or another.  And why not? It  is an inexpensive social activity that gives cause to go and see what's around the bend. It is a map to secret places that are important enough to have been shared.  It is very imortant to share, and have shared special places & events such as sun sets. I beleive that we are unique in that we aknowledge things and give them meaning. Practically speaking a sun set is very important to the functioning of life as we know it. But if I do not recognize that it is a beautiful event at a certain place then that beauty is lost. It has no meaning. On the other hand when I share the sun set with a lover who appreciates it, and its ambience leads to a moment of shared bliss. That place has gained meaning for two people and the place is no longer just a place t is a special place. If my lover and I give that special place a name, which when said at the right time invokes an emotional response... Well lets just say I appreciate the power in the sentiment, so yes for various reasons GeoCaching resonated with me from the beginning. For now I stumble across many a special places that I love to share.
What I do not understand is why despite enjoying GCing I woke up not wanting to GC on day 2 of  my 365 days of GeoCaching. My only guess is that it has something to do with the fine art of self sabotage (SS) I seem to have brought up to a level I can only call art. Today I chose to ignore thoughts of SS.
I asked Niki if she and Novalee wanted to join me on this GC. She did, even though it was raining. She told me Novalee likes using her umbrella, and KC needed to go on his morning walk.  I donned my felt  cowboy hat. It is actually a fedora, and it is great rain gear. Keeps my head quite dry. I also wore my blue fall coat. Not my preferred color, but it was given to me by a very nice lady whose husband no longer had use for it.  Niki wore her 04 super bowl champion Patriots sweat shirt. She LOVES the PATs... Go Pats! Have they won a Super Bowl since they stopped cheating? The question was rhetorical...lol, South Park "Sooo Kewl"  I packd my camera in my GC back pack. I am no great photographer but that does not stop me from trying.
Niki got KC, Novalee and I waited for them to join us. I fired up my gps checked for the nearest cache. It was Kane Travel But Motel (GC11Q3Q), this cache was .4 miles away. Niki and I studied the layout of the land displayed on the GPS. We decided that we should travel Janeway up through the 100 block to its end where it intersects with Chase street. It looked as though we could follow Chase til its termination on Greeves St and be in the ball park of the Cache. All of us being in good spirits began our journey. I walked up hill along Janeway street noting not for the first time that I liked the sidewalks  here in Kane. They are generally in good repair. Niki walked beside me KC staying just ahead of her, he is much easier to walk with the choke caller. Novalee hung back a bit, making sure not to step on the cracks. She manages to turn most every thing into a game. The street is a slight incline. The 200 block of Janeway ends at Dawson. Today I am looking at houses. I like to look at roofs and windows. I will be working on both at my house when time and money permits. We cross Dawson and continue onto Janeway the 100 block the grade is steeper and we cross to the side of Janeway where the sidewalk is in better condition. Novalee begins to sing a medley of non sence songs. It is kinda cute. KC sniffs around for places that need watering. Niki and flirt back and forth. I have moments when I am in such a good mood, I can not help but let it burst fourth. I am afraid I come off as a bit of a spazz sometimes, today however I just don't care about that. I let out a "Manomanah" Niki smiles and adds a "Doodoodadoodoo" I laugh, she smiles. Thank You Jim Hensen. We come to the end of Janeway 100 block and turn left onto Chase Street. Kane does not have a Main St I guess most consider Frailey St as such, but a lot of the action happens on Chase St. Here you will find 3 magnificent churches St Callistas, the First Babtist, and the Presbyterian. The Eagles club, and Friends Memorial Library are nestled between the St Callistas and the First Baptist, which is the only brick Baptist church I have ever seen. Also along  the other side of Chase st is 4Sons Texas Hot arguably the most popular dining spot in Kane... Amongst all this on the corner of Chase and Bayard is the ruins of a brick building which succumbed to flames embrace  in the not to distant past. This building was once the home of a eatery/dance hall. Fire tore a hole through the roof. When I first moved to Kane I fell in love with this place. If I had the resources I would open a cafe/book store here. It is a little dream of mine. The location is perfect with the Churches so close and Texas Hot being diagonal across the way  on the side of the road within view. Their is even room for a parking lot. This building is at the nexus of commerce. I discuss this with Niki once again as we walk by. She agrees with everything I say and we both awkwardly put it out of our minds. It is not every day that such a gold mine is so close but so far from within my grasp. I sigh look at the GPS we are close to the cache now. We continue to the end of Chase, here it intersects Greeves. On the other side of Greeves there is the United Methodist Church and the Kane Motel. We check for traffic, Niki recites the words I penned so long ago to help the kids when crossing the street. "Look left, look right, no cars in sight" Novalee stumbles along with the recitation getting the sounds right if  not the words. We head for the Kane Motel,  the where abouts of the cache has just become obvious. The gps verifies my speculation. I found the Cache quickly. It is outside of the Motel but on the property. I have stayed at this motel before. Two Aprils ago. Jeff and I stayed here one night when we could not stand the smell of ourselves any longer. He came here to help me work on the house that I now live in. He is a good guy and I sometimes miss my good friend who would travel so far just to help me out. I salute you Jeff. The owners of the Kane Motel are good people who treated us fairly and honestly I should have known they were geocachers... lol. This is a good place and we take pictures, then head home... A very good day

Day 1 A Little Known Park (GCQR5Y)

It was Sunday morning the children were up, their needs were met.  I waited in eager anticipation for this journey to begin.  While waiting I set up the ground work for this blog. I wondered not for the first time since conceiveing my plan to complete 365 caches, or quests in 365 days, if I would finish it. As I have told the children on more then one occasion, lets wait and see, for time tells no lies.  Eventually Niki wakes and comes down stairs. I can here she has come down. Takoda is excited. I fold the top corner of the page of the book I am reading ("Knights of Shadows", Roger Zelazny sooo kewl). I came in side from the porch and bid Niki and the kids farewell.
My first quest. The journey begins. The sky is a dull silver. The air is cool. The foliage  a strange mix of subdued brilliance. I begin walking GPS in one hand. KCs' leash in the other. My camera is in my back pack. The pooper scooper bag hanging at my side draping over my shoulder chewbaca style. I look at the screen. Pick a near by cache, I have over a thousand such caches programed into my Magellan  Explorist GC. I pick the nearest, it is .3 miles away. Piece of cake. I begin walking check to make sure I am heading in the right direction. I gain a rough Idea as to where the cache is.  I head down Janeway towards Welsh. KC eagerly leading they way, At the bottom of Janeway on the corner of Janeway and Welsh heading up hill towards the Buckhorn sits a blue and white house someone must have bought it for recent maintenance has been done. I walk away down Welsh towards Kinzua Ave. KC stops frequently to water posts and trees. I wonder not for the first time what it is that makes one place more water able than another.. I keep my eyes open. I want to see all the loveliness this season has to offer... I inhale deeply.. I feel the slight chill I look at the silver sky. I will the landscape to become part of me. Fall has a beginning middle and end. This is the beginning. Falls fireworks dance on the limbs of  trees. Fall is as much the death of summer as spring is summers birth. Oh but what a glorious death. Or maybe that is too drastic. It is time for the trees to shed their evening gowns in a mad dance with the wind, then to rest the winter in quiet slumber in winters embrace. There is a poem in there somewhere but I have yet to find the words. I continue my journey satisfied with my thoughts. I am in a happy place. Shaw intersects with Kinzua, I take Kinzua, Cross Hacker and continue onto Kinzua. I quick look at the gps confirms my suspicion that I have arrived. I quickly find the hidden cache. I am not ready to look inside yet. I want to take a look around.
This is a pleasant place. A good picnic spot.  The area is filled with blue flowers bordering dark wood. A well trimmed meadow. Trees that reach high for silver skies. Benches tables and out door grills. KC growls at the shadows in the wood. I here the towns pulse with the swish of cars cutting air.
KC and I spend a while here. I take pictures. Go back to the cache, which was in an ammo box. I log my visit in the log book, and then we slowly meander back home...
